Death in a Box

July 28th, 2008

So to celebrate Sarah’s completion of summer school, I thought I would bust out a custom ice cream from our local Cold Stone Creamery. Being a ‘cold stone newb’…I made a critical error when calculating what I thought to be a tasty treat:

Cake Batter Ice Cream+Cookie Dough+Brownies=Death

Delicious…yes, but the price you pay is much too high. Save yourselves…it’s too late for me…

Blog Fail

July 26th, 2008

Yeah it’s been a couple months since I’ve last posted. June\July 08 were remarkably overwhelming for the Bonds. Work has been absolutely insane …Sarah lost her mind and stacked physiology & statistics during an 8-week summer session at OU, and I’ve been trying to stay on top of the p90x workouts with minimal skips. Needless to say, I’ve failed miserably at keeping up with the blog…but updates are certainly coming.

There is Never Enough Room

May 18th, 2008

Last night I had one the more uncomfortable public bathroom experiences I’ve had in a long time. Picture a very small men’s room. It’s basically just a hallway with just enough room for a toilet, urinal, and sink all in a row and spaced about 2 feet apart with no dividers. There is a latch on the door which is a strong indication that expected capacity of the restroom was one person.

I cautiously push on the door, it opens freely revealing a man standing in front of the toilet urinating.

Me: “Whooaa..sorry man” (backing out)

Stranger: “No problem, there’s plenty of room”

Choosing not to respond, I just back out and start to walk away when I hear…

“Come baaaack…there’s plenty of rooooom”

No dude…there is never enough room. I decide to come back another time. *shudder*

Time for a rest…

May 12th, 2008

Day 7 of p90x is a day of rest, with the option to do the StretchX video. The title is self explanatory; basically an hour of stretching out all those sore muscles. Supa-relaxing and mellow, this is an awesome way to wrap up the week.

Tomorrow I begin Phase1/Week2! Now that I’ve commented on each of the workouts, I’ll just be updating with progress and any additional information that might be relevant.

1 week down, 11 to go!

Kenpo-X

May 11th, 2008

Today I woke up with a ton of energy and quickly made the decent into hell….or the third bedroom we converted into a fitness area.

Day 6 is Kenpo-X. Lots of kicking and punching routines based on Kenpo Karate moves. Honestly, this was more difficult than I thought it would be. My biggest issue is my absolute lack of coordination. Making my fists move while kicking my legs results in a physical display that can only be compared to what I would look like if I were to be attacked by a swarm of killer bees….not pretty.

Tons of cardio in this routine. The four scheduled breaks in the video were simply to stop punching and kicking, and start running in place followed by jumping jacks. They really keep you moving throughout the entire workout. Each of the periodic heart rate checks I did reported 140-150bpm. I was drenched by the time it was over…yummy.

Overall today was a much better experience. I’m really focusing on getting enough rest, protein, and supplements to maintain this pace. Tomorrow is a rest day, which I will be taking full advantage of.

Legs & Back

May 10th, 2008

Owwwww!

Today was a bit challenging. For some reason I woke up feeling surprisingly drained and low on energy, but managed to drag my butt into the workout room and kick off Day 5 of my new p90x experience. During the vigorous regiment of pullups and squats, my legs and arms felt unusually heavy. Being that I’ve not been in the best of shape, I should make an effort to remind myself that I’m not going to be able to keep up with the folks on the video…at least for a while.

So I can bang on a few chinups without falling apart, but the wide-grip pullups are impossible without resting one heel/toe on a chair. With that said, I’ve set a somewhat aggressive goal of being able to execute at least 10 unassisted pullups at the end of 90 days. I’m not sure how realistic that is…but it’s worth a shot.

The leg portion is horrible. Rotating through thigh, calf, & butt burning routines ranging from static wall squats to plyo-style jump squats; by the end of the workout my legs were jelly.

Excellent workout…I just need to make sure I’m including the right nutrients in my diet to maintain a decent energy level.

YogaX

May 9th, 2008

The p90x workout for today was YogaX..which I’ve been dreading for the past three days. I’m relatively flexible, so the reluctance was not from fear of total failure; but more of a concern that I was sacrificing a good day of cardio and weight training to just roll around doing stretchy chick stuff on the floor. MORE LIES.

This was awesome. I loved every minute of the routine. At roughly 1hr 30mins, you spend the first 45mins transitioning between up/downward dog into a variety of funky stances and stretches. Leg and core strength is really tested as you move in and out of these poses. The last 45 minutes is a serious of poses and body twists that really looses up the upper body. A slow release from a static twist resulted in 3 glorious cracks up the middle of my back. The wrapup is about 5 minutes of completely relaxing positions which nearly put me to sleep.

I will say that I sucked at lot of the positions, especially the ‘one-leg lean into a stretch’ poses; but for the most part I did ok. I was only able to hold Crane for 10 seconds, but I’m sure that will improve with time and practice.

This was a invaluable break in the week of hell that I’ve been enduring. Any soreness I had felt prior to Yoga-x, has been completely evacuated. I’m sold…

Shoulders and Arms

May 8th, 2008

p90x day3: Shoulders and Arms. In the past few weeks I sampled this workout a couple of times. I LOVE IT. After yesterday’s plyometric punishment, I couldn’t wait to grab the dumbells again. One hour of alternating shoulder/tricep/bicep exercises followed by the oh-so-punishing AbRipperX. What a great way to start the day!

The routine hits these muscle groups from multiple angles with a seemingly endless number of reps. Just as you complete four sets…guess what…you do that same four again, take a stretch break and hit the next round of three or sets. Both invigorating and draining, I leave for work feeling like I can flip a car over. Ok maybe a bicycle…but I expect the strength to show up later. ;)

Awesome workout!

Plyometrics

May 7th, 2008

WTF!

One hour of jumping, lunging, jumping, lunging…and jumping again; is about 59 minutes too many. P90X Plyometrics is by far one of the most brutal cardio/leg routines I’ve ever endured. I pushed through taking as few additional water breaks as possible…and forced myself to get through the bonus rounds.

Typically when I hit the treadmill for 45 mins, I’m dumping some pretty serious sweat. Today our workout room looked like some sick bastard was throwing jellyfish into our ceiling fan. SO MUCH SWEAT. The poor towel I was using was drenched beyond belief…ughhhh.

The appetite! A normal day for me consists of about 6 small meals over a 15 hour period, but I was absolutely ravenous when lunch rolled around. I destroyed a regular-sized Quiznos turkey sub (normally I get a small) in record time! I nearly took down someone’s stray toddler but Frost held me back.

The impact plyo had on me was remarkable, and I’m sooo looking forward to the day when I can push through the hour without being a wuss ;)
